Childrens Book - Birds used to teach lessons in local book

"Two Arizona Black Birds"

By Milton Lipson, DVM - Illustrated by David Fitzsimmons (Arizona Daily Star Cartoonist)

When Milton "Doc" Lipson used to make up stories to charm his grandchildren, he liked to wrap up the tales with a gentle little lesson showing how his make-believe characters could fit into his grandchildren's lives. The black birds in his story are both residents of Arizona's Sonoran Desert. One is the handsome, shiny black phainopepla. The other is a starling whose small, black-feathered body has enough white feathers scattered throughout to make it look almost polka-dotted. The story teaches that although they look different, each can learn from one another. Lipson, who died in 2007, was a successful veterinarian who owned the Harvey Animal Hospital in Detroit, where he had a small- and exotic-animal practice for 35 years. In 1980, he and his wife, pediatrician Marilyn Heins, moved to Arizona. In addition to volunteering his talents on several Indian reservations, Lipson earned a master's degree in wildlife and fisheries science from the University of Arizona. After Lipson's death, Heins, for many years the Arizona Daily Star's parenting columnist, arranged to have the book published. She engaged the services of Star editorial cartoonist David Fitzsimmons to illustrate "Two Arizona Black Birds." Fitzsimmons brings his customary wit to depicting the birds as they confront their frustrations (as well as the amusingly startled anxiety of the insects that are their prey).
